Comment on Rifugio Lancia – Bocchetta Foxi – Mountain Bike 2008:
This was quite the ride, both spectacular and strenuous (especially since I was feeling kind of wobbly because of a flue that I had caught). With a speedy pace set by Matteo and Giuliano during our way to the Rifugio Lancia I was suffering and sweating like a madman and about to call it a day a 100 times. Somehow I made it up though and the hot tea w/ almond cake made me recover and even look forward to what was to come. Some more uphill brought us to a crest from where we had absolutely stunning views overlooking the Pasubio area and on the “Piccoli Dolomiti” (the Little Dolomites). Locals around here always say that Trentino is the “piu’ bello” (most beautiful) place on earth and even though many haven’t even traveled beyond the provincial or state limits they somehow got it..right! If you like rugged mountains w/ steep ravines, covered w/ pine forests, and dotted w/ quaint out of the way little villages (many times not more than a church and a few houses, incl. of course at least one bar!), you will LOVE this place. It’s an outdoors heaven!
So back to cycling. The 1st downhill stretch was challenging more so because the error margin was nearly zero; you fall, you die! That is on the wrong places where there were sheer vertical drops of a 1000ft. Not being a similar bike wizard as the other two and having to be careful because of a recent ACL repair I had to walk down quite a few stretches. But once the hard (read “impossible to ride”) sections where done the rest of the trail was awesome with fast single tracks twisting down the forest slopes.
Once we reached “civilization” Matteo, of course, took us off the boring main road that would have led directly to where we parked the car and thus I found myself climbing again and clenching my teeth to keep up with my Italian bike friends. Finally the uphill ended and we sped down on more exiting trails through an area where dinosaur prints were found.
The whole purpose of Matteo’s detour was to engage a super technical trail that even on feet was hard to descent, and I know because I had to do quite a bit in the walking mode!
All in all a fantastic day/ride which makes me want MORE of the SAME!

    Matteo
